Florian Miot closing in on Lommel podium
After another solid day with two 6th places behind his name Florian Miot ended 4th overall in the second EMX125 race in Lommel. The talented KTM Diga Junior Racing rider will get one more chance on Saturday to capture a rostrum finish. Thomas Sileika and Emil Jönrup wrapped up their EMX250 campaigns with some positives.
With races following each other quickly the KTM Diga Junior Racing riders had little time to ponder on how things went on Saturday. Florian Miot didn’t quite feel at ease in the morning’s sessions and lined up ninth for what was the penultimate EMX125 round.
The heavy Lommel sand once again demanded full concentration of the riders while rider mistakes were typically more common than usual. Starting his race in sixth the Frenchman also claimed sixth in the opening moto. In the second moto a more inspired Miot ran as high as third but he eventually had to settle for sixth again.
EMX125 team mate Daniel Volovich was pleased with the track layout but found the going particularly rough. The Belarussian had to play catch-up in the first race after a first lap crash that saw him take P32. He too fared better in the final sprint of the day. Daniel had better start and did his best to fight his way into to the top-20 but the energy-sapping terrain demanded its toll. In the end Volovich came home 25th.
Thomas Sileika’s qualifying session was marred with yellow flags. Not able to record that elusive one flying lap Thomas could only muster 28th. Heavily penalised by his grid position the Latvian went to work and climbed up to P16. In an attempting a pass for 15th he went down with two corners to go and finished 18th. A better start and solid riding resulted in a decent 14th place in the final moto of the championship.
Sweden’s Emil Jönrup struggled in time practice as well. As a result the #107 KTM Diga Junior Racing rider was relegated to a lowly 32nd gate pick. However Emil climbed the leaderboard from 32nd to 21st. With consistent lap times and his personal best for the season it was a great effort but unfortunately Jönrup trailed 20th placed James Carpenter by just over 3 seconds!
Although a better start put Emil in a great place to finally pick up his much coveted first EMX250 championship point it was not meant to be. A crash in the opening lap and a struggle to regain his rhythm weer up against him. Jönrup thus finished 26th.
On Saturday Florian Miot and Daniel Volovich will line up for the last EMX125 event of the exceptional 2020 season.
Florian Miot: “It could have been better for sure. I had two good starts but in the first moto I never really got my rhythm right. I had a really hard time and placed sixth. In the second moto I was third for a long time with the leaders in my sight. Due to an error a few laps from the end I crossed the line in sixth once more.”
Thomas Sileika: “I felt pretty good on the track yesterday but that difficult qualifying position put me in a bad spot for the rest of the day! In terms of riding it was quite okay. A top-15 placement was definitely possible in the first moto two but I crashed two corners before the finish when I was 16th. Although you had to be extra careful in a few places I enjoyed my riding in Lommel.”
Emil Jönrup: “It was a pretty good day for me but also a frustrating one! I came back well after my bad start in the first race and finished 21st, I was so close to my first point! It was a shame that I crashed in the second moto especially because I never really found my flow again. The track was nice but seemed a bit more slippery and slightly more harder packed than before.”
Daniel Volovich: “I found it hard to get a fast lap in time practice. In spite of my crash early on in the first race I was riding quite good but I had to settle for 32nd. My second moto was the best one of the day. I fought for the top-20 but track conditions got really heavy and I finished 25th.”
