Florian Miot podiums at Matterley Basin!

The first round of the motocross world championship, EMX125 and WMX classes was staged at the impressive Matterley Basin. In spite of challenging conditions 16-year old Florian Miot put in a strong showing in the EMX125 series. A six and three scorecard gave the talented Frenchman a career second EMX podium. WMX rider TJ O’Hare finished just outside the top-10 to finish 12th in her first GP of the year.

After torrential downpour on Friday and Saturday combined with strong winds the motocross community sighed a sigh of relief on Sunday when the beloved circuit near Winchester was greeted by dry conditions.

Reigning Italian 125 champion Miot immediately underlined his ambitions for the season. Florian rode his KTM 125SX to the fastest time in his qualifying group while topping the combined timesheet as well. A bad start and first lap errors knocked Florian back to P15 in the opening sprint. Climbing back up to 6th allowed him to salvage as many points as he could. The second race was a lot more consistent for Miot. He made a better second start and was third early on when a small mistake lost him contact to the front runners. Eventually ‘FloFlo’ crossed the line third thus securing his second EMX125 rostrum finish after Saint-Jean d’Angely in 2018.

Australia’s TJ O’Hare suffered a complicated first day at Matterley Basin. She never felt at ease and had a hard time coming to grips with a treacherous track where traction was most unpredictable. Sunday saw a reverse of fortunes for the #625 KTM Diga Junior Racing rider. Thanks to the excellent track maintenance work racing conditions were a lot better and O’Hare put in a solid ride to come home 10th.

The first EMX125 round of the season was one to forget quickly for Daniel Volovich. Daniel qualified 17th in his group, enough to line up in both races, but never gelled with the track and failed to score points.  The KTM Diga Junior Racing team heads to Valkenswaard in the Netherlands next weekend where Emil Jönrup and Alessio Sasso will kick of their 2020 EMX250 campaigns.

Florian Miot: “I posted the fastest time in qualifying which gave me a good feeling to kick off the weekend. My start in the first moto was off and things got only more complicated when I went down twice in the opening lap! Coming back was hard with the track conditions we had on Saturday. In the second moto I finished third after a slightly better start. Overall I’m really pleased with my podium although I need
to continue working on my fitness. Due to the ruts and slippery patches the track was pretty gnarly but racing this awesome track was an absolute pleasure!”

TJ O’Hare: “I think I went down five times in the first moto and I had a few off-track excursions! Looking back I think first round nervousness was a factor too. I was too eager to get to the front quickly and a bit too aggressive for the type of conditions we had. I had to regroup on Sunday and that’s what I did with a solid top-10. Overall the second moto was a lot better than the first so I’m really happy with that. Riding was a lot more fun too! Honestly the track was pretty perfect, the soil was tacky and had some nice ruts so we couldn’t have asked for anything more after all the run we had. I’m really looking forward to race Valkenswaard because I always like racing in the sand.”

Daniel Volovich: “Qualifying went quite okay but in the motos my riding was not as good as it could be. I really struggled in the races. I went down in each moto and a painful wrist kept me back. I need to learn from this experience and work on improving.”
